June 2010 President's Message

May 26, 2010

Cari fratelli e sorelle,

Spring was here, or so I’ve been told. It’s that time of year when leaves turn green and flowers bloom, but when it’s cold and damp it’s not very pleasurable. We’ve had much too much of bad or cool weather and today we’re jumping directly into summer as the temperature is in the high 90s. I know summer officially starts on June 21st but 90 degree weather is summer to me! I miss not having a nice, cool and sunny spring.

For our lodge we had an interesting month where we initiated some new members at our May meeting and we have more in the wings to be initiated at our September meeting.

Our May 15th Scholarship Fund-Raiser Dinner/Dance at the CrestView in Woburn was the very best social event this lodge has ever put together. Jeanne Squires and her committee put together and managed an event that was ‘classy’ and featured a tasty and plentiful roast beef dinner (with pasta, too!) along with Music by Trilogy, one of the finest orchestras in the area. EVERYONE who attended gave us rave reviews. The only minus was the fact we fell far short of our fund-raising goal and didn’t show enough of a profit to make a donation to our scholarship fund. It’s a shame so many of our members choose not to attend our own events to support their lodge.

At our May lodge meeting it was decided that we’ll NOT have a fall dance. We have Friday, October 29th reserved at CrestView but we’re going to plan something different for a change, something that will enable us to separate fund-raising from social events. We have a committee in place already and I know we’ll have something of a social nature to please everyone, not just the 30% who always show up!

On Thursday, June 3rd, I’ll be presenting our Burlington Sons of Italy Lodge 2223’s scholarship to a worthy graduating high school senior on the way to college in a ceremony at Burlington High School. The public is always welcome.

The “Breakfast Committee” has a breakfast (what else? ?) planned on Sunday morning, June 6th and the price for adults is ONLY $8. What a bargain! The committee tells me this year’s breakfast will be even better that last year’s successful event. Come and join us on that date for sumptuous breakfast at St. Margaret’s school hall from 9 – 12. Call Pat Moreno for tickets: 781-272-5375.

The Grand Lodge State Convention will be held this year in Mansfield on Saturday, June 12th. Phil D’Alleva and I will be attending to represent our lodge. Pat Moreno will also be attending as part of the Grand Lodge contingent in his role as Culture Chairman.

On July 17th we’re planning to see Meredith Wilson’s “The Music Man” at Reagle Theater in Waltham This award-winning audience favorite makes a return to the Reagle stage this summer along with television personality Scott Wahle as Harold Hill and Broadway leading lady Sarah Pfisterer as Marian Paroo. Traveling salesman and all around con-man, Harold Hill finds himself in River City, Iowa trying to earn his fortune selling instruments and uniforms for a Boy's band. His plan is to run away with the money before the townspeople find out that Harold's not a professor of music. All of Professor Hill's plans are moving along smoothly until he falls in love with the local librarian and piano teacher, Marian Paroo. This show hosts such ageless tunes as "76 Trombones," "Til There Was You," "Shipoopi," "Goodnight My Someone," and many more. . So far we have 14 people signed up. If interested in joining us, please call me (781-272-0529) before I buy our tickets around June 7th or so.

We’re due for a council meeting which I’ll schedule in September upon our return from the summer break which means that this June meeting will be our last meeting until we resume on Tuesday, September 21st. With that in mind, our tradition is to keep the June meeting short and enjoy a “Pot Luck” supper together to share Italian delicacies and good fellowship. Take note: The meeting will start at 6:30. Carmella Dardeno is our contact person for the Pot Luck dishes so please call her to let her know what specialty you plan to bring so as to avoid too many duplications. Based on past Pot Luck suppers I know our wonderful cooks will outdo themselves in quality and taste. Carmella’s telephone number is 718-272-2407. Call her!

In closing, I want to thank all those who attend our meetings on a regular basis and participate in our lodge activities, especially those activities geared to raising funds. Participation by so many will continue to make all our lodge’s efforts a success.

I hope to see a full house on Tuesday, June 15 at 6:30! Our meetings are always enjoyable and provide an evening out to enjoy the fellowship we all share. Remember, YOU are the Burlington Lodge. Mark your calendar!

Ciao!
